he maketh his sun to rise

Up, Down.

Ecclesiastes 1:
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Matthew 5:
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
Angra dos Reis, Morro da CariocaAngra dos Reis, Ilha GrandeAngra dos Reis, Ilha GrandeAngra dos Reis

Angra dos Reis, Angra of the kings, a paradise on earth, a place I lived for a year or so in the early oughts, I remember that just before I first came there a similar 'deslizamento' took out parts of a neighbouring favela killing at least a dozen or two people, a peril of the rainy season, usually restricted to the favelas which climb the hillsides where there are no official property titles, though it is not because of faulty construction that they come down, it is location, the guys who live in the favelas and build their homes there are the same ones who build the skyscrapers in Rio de Janeiro & São Paulo and they know how to build

it always seems an irony to me that in Brasil the high ground is occupied by the poor, with the coolest breezes and the best views, this year the favela Morro da Carioca took a big hit, but also this year the rich side of town, out on the big island shared the grief.

idle speculation maybe but when it comes to praying I wonder if it is not more likely to happen in the favelas, I can easily imagine making a prayer for the souls you see stretched out beneath you ... but who knows?
